The Department of Crop Biology was established in 1987 by the professors Francesco D’Amato and Enrico Moschini, directors of the Institute of Genetics and Institute of Horticulture, respectively.

The two institutions had  close collaboration in  the past in relevant topics for genetic improvement of crop plants. The collaborative work prompted inter twisting approaches and share knowledge through the stablishment of a departmental structure. With the aggregation of Microbiology, the scientific expertise of the Department have expanded allowing greater interaction in various research branches.

The Department of Crop Biology is divided into four thematic areas: Plant Science, Horticulture, Plant Physiology and Microbiology. Each has its own headquarters. The Area of Plant Physiology is located in Via Mariscoglio, the area of Plant Science in Via Matteotti, the area of Agricultural Microbiology is located at the headquarters of the Faculty in Via del Borghetto, while the area of Horticulture is located on the Avenue of Piagge and is also the administrative headquarter of the Department.

The Department has three libraries located into the areas of Plant Science, Horticulture and Microbiology. These libraries are managed by the Central Library of the Faculty.

The Department of Crop Biology of the University of Pisa, has a number of laboratories and experimental facilities (greenhouses, growth chambers, field plots) and high level skills in the areas of plant genetics, food technology, agricultural chemistry, food/soil/environmental microbiology and horticultural/ornamental crops. These are used for educational purposes and also to carry out research and analytic/consulting services on behalf of private and public organizations

The staff carries out its activities in teaching the courses of study organized by the Faculty and those organized in collaboration with the Faculty of M.F.N. (Science and Technology for the Environment), with the Faculty of Pharmacy (Herbal Techniques) and the Faculty of Veterinary (Biosafety and Food Quality).
